🥪 Katz's Deli in Woodbridge, CT: Why I Prefer It to NYC's Famous Katz's
Two Katz's Delis, Two States, No Family Connection—and One Delicious Connecticut Surprise
It's not Katz's in New York. It's still Katz's. It's in Connecticut. And, spoiler alert, we had more fun! 🥪😂
Pastrami, Matzo Ball Soup, Potato Knishes—and Why This Connecticut Deli Won Me Over 🔥

🎯 FunTrip Index™ : 8.25 / 10 🔥⭐🚀
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ ★☆
Tooltip: A terrific neighborhood deli with outstanding comfort food, friendly service, and excellent overall value.
The Pastrami Rachel is the standout, supported by delicious matzo ball soup, potato knishes, pancakes, blintzes, and coconut macaroons.
A slightly salty broth, an unremarkable cheesecake, and modest décor keep it short of perfection.
But the food and relaxed atmosphere more than compensate.
FunTrip Index™: 8.25/10 — Highly recommended.

🗽 1. The Great Katz's Identity Crisis
First, a clarification that might save us from receiving a strongly worded letter from Manhattan.
Katz's Deli & Restaurant in Woodbridge, Connecticut, is not affiliated with the legendary Katz's Delicatessen on New York City's Lower East Side.
Different ownership. Different history. Different state.
Same country, fortunately.
The Manhattan institution dates back to 1888. The Woodbridge restaurant, established in 1998, is a comparatively youthful newcomer.
But after visiting both, I've reached a rather provocative conclusion.
I like Katz's in New York. I love Katz's in Woodbridge.
There. I've said it.
Some New Yorkers may demand that my passport be confiscated.
And I understand their devotion. The original Katz's is a genuine culinary landmark, with enormous sandwiches, decades of history, and a cultural presence that Connecticut simply cannot replicate.
But when it comes to the experience of actually eating lunch?
Woodbridge wins my vote.

🚗 2. Parking, Pastrami, and the Joy of Not Standing in Line
Our Sunday lunch began with a pleasant surprise.
The parking lot was almost full.
Clearly, we weren't the only people with good taste.
Yet we were seated almost immediately.
No tourist marathon. No ticket-system anxiety. No elaborate negotiations over a table.
Just a comfortable neighborhood restaurant with pleasant, competent service.
The décor won't earn a feature in Architectural Digest. The bar looks welcoming, the atmosphere is casual, and everything feels refreshingly unpretentious.
In other words, exactly what I want from a deli.
And then the food arrived.
🥣 3. The Matzo Ball Soup Test
I've eaten enough disappointing matzo balls to establish a small museum.
Some are dense enough to qualify as construction materials. Others dissolve into the broth like a failed scientific experiment.
Katz's Woodbridge gets it right.
The matzo ball is tender, flavorful, and thoroughly satisfying.
The chicken broth is a little salty for my taste, but the overall result is excellent.
In fact, the matzo ball is so good that I'd happily order two.
Unfortunately, doubling the pleasure comes close to doubling the price.
Management has apparently studied the economics of irresistible matzo balls.
Respect the business model. 🥣💰

🥪 4. The Pastrami Rachel: The Star of the Show
Now we're talking.
The Pastrami Rachel combines pastrami, melted Swiss cheese, coleslaw, and Russian dressing on grilled rye bread.
It's an extraordinary sandwich.
The pastrami was unusually lean, beautifully prepared, and delicious. The coleslaw added freshness and texture. The melted cheese and dressing completed the experience without overwhelming the meat.
Even the presentation impressed me.
Orderly. Attractive. Almost suspiciously civilized for such an indulgent sandwich.
Absolutely addictive.
This alone is reason enough to return.
And for traditional corned-beef enthusiasts, Woodbridge regulars also praise its different cuts, including the much-discussed Elaine cut.
I'll leave that particular judgment to another visit.
My Rachel has already earned its place in my personal deli hall of fame.
Check out our take on one of the best pizzas in the world, and we've been to Naples, Italy many times:
🍅 Pepe's Fresh Tomato Pizza Is Still Worth the Trip to New Haven
🥔 5. Knishes, Pancakes, and Blintzes: The Supporting Cast Steals the Show
The round potato knish?
Mandatory.
Delicious, comforting, and exactly what a proper deli side should be.
There's also a spinach version, which is already on our next-visit agenda.
The potato pancake rocks.
So do the cheese blintzes.
Next time, we're adding strawberry topping to the blintzes. Some scientific experiments simply cannot be postponed.
The coleslaw also passes with flying colors.
By this stage, the kitchen had assembled an impressive winning streak.
And our table was beginning to resemble a small-scale food festival.
🍰 6. Desserts: Winners, Losers, and My Mother's Rugelach
The cheesecake was rich, creamy, and classically prepared.
Good? Absolutely.
Great? Not quite.
Worth the calories?
Let's call that an open question.
The coconut macaroons, however, were delicious.
No debate there.
And then came the rugelach.
My mother adored rugelach.
I've never shared her enthusiasm.
I tried them again, hoping that decades of culinary experience might have changed my mind.
They hadn't.
But others at our table enjoyed the flaky, sweet pastries, so perhaps this is a longstanding personal deficiency.
One cannot win every argument with one's taste buds.
Especially when one's mother would probably have disagreed.

💵 7. The Value Proposition: Quality Beats Hype
Let's be fair.
Woodbridge isn't cheap.
But it isn't outrageously expensive either.
I'd call the prices middle-of-the-road for a traditional deli meal of this quality.
And compared with the Manhattan institution—where a pastrami sandwich now costs around $30—the Connecticut experience feels particularly appealing.
Of course, these aren't identical restaurants, and a direct sandwich-price comparison doesn't capture portion sizes, ingredients, or operating costs.
But value is about more than the bill.
It's about food quality, service, comfort, convenience, and the pleasure of the experience.
By that measure, Woodbridge delivers.
You don't leave wondering whether the hype was worth the hassle.
You leave wondering when you can return.

⚡ Quick Take / TL;DR
Katz's Deli & Restaurant in Woodbridge is a Connecticut gem.
Our favorites: Pastrami Rachel, matzo ball soup, potato knish, potato pancake, cheese blintzes, and coconut macaroons.
The cheesecake was merely good, and rugelach still hasn't won me over.
The restaurant is casual, comfortable, welcoming, and worth its prices.
Verdict: I'd happily return—and I prefer the experience to NYC's famous Katz's.
❓ FAQ
Is Katz's in Woodbridge affiliated with Katz's Delicatessen in NYC?
No. They are independently operated businesses that share a name and a classic Jewish deli tradition.
What should I order at Katz's Woodbridge?
My first recommendation is the Pastrami Rachel. Add matzo ball soup, potato pancakes, and a potato knish. If you're still hungry, try the cheese blintzes or coconut macaroons.
Is Katz's Woodbridge better than Katz's NYC?
That's entirely subjective. I prefer Woodbridge for its combination of food, service, comfort, and convenience. Manhattan's Katz's remains an iconic destination with its own considerable merits.
Is parking available?
Yes. There is a parking lot, although it was nearly full during our Sunday visit.
Do I need a reservation?
We were seated promptly without one. Wait times can vary, particularly during busy periods.
Where is Katz's Deli in Woodbridge?
1658 Litchfield Turnpike, Woodbridge, Connecticut 06525.
What are the hours?
The restaurant lists daily hours of 10 AM to 8 PM. Check before traveling, particularly on holidays.
🌎 Food for Thought: The Cross-Hub Connection
There's an interesting lesson here about brands, reputation, and value.
The most famous business isn't necessarily the one that delivers the best experience for every customer.
Brand recognition creates expectations.
But execution creates loyalty.
That's true of restaurants.
It's true of hotels.
It's true of consumer products.
And, dare I say, it's true of investing.
A famous name can command a premium. Whether that premium is justified depends on what customers - and shareholders - actually receive.
Sometimes the greatest opportunity isn't the obvious market leader.
It's the overlooked competitor quietly doing something extraordinarily well.
Preferably with a magnificent pastrami sandwich.
✈️ 9. One Final Word: Nobody Beats Langer's
Of course, there's another deli worth mentioning.
Langer's in Los Angeles.
There, my feelings go beyond affection.
It's adoration.
Nobody beats Langer's.
But the way things are going, if you're in New York or CT, it'll cost you a thousand bucks before you can enjoy your first bite at Langer's.
Flying is like its prices: very high. ✈️💸
Meanwhile, Woodbridge is considerably closer.
And the Pastrami Rachel is calling my name.
Carpe Diem! 🥪❤️
