What Does “Irrational” Really Mean in Investing? Jason Zweig Has the Perfect Definition 😂
The Devil’s Financial Dictionary May Have Just Explained Every Market Argument Ever
We’re all rational investors. It’s everybody else who seems to have a problem.
📌 “Every investor recognizes irrationality instantly. The difficulty begins when the mirror is involved.” — FUNanc1al
Markets have an extraordinary number of irrational investors.
Fortunately, none of us is one of them.
😂
Jason Zweig captured this curious phenomenon beautifully in The Devil’s Financial Dictionary:
IRRATIONAL:
“A word you use to describe any other investor than yourself.”
— Jason Zweig, The Devil’s Financial Dictionary
That's it.
We could probably end the article here.
Carpe Diem.
But where would be the fun in that?
🧠 Everyone Else Is Crazy
Think about how effortlessly we diagnose other investors.
Someone buys a stock after it rises 200%?
Irrational exuberance.
Someone refuses to buy our favorite stock despite the obviously magnificent fundamentals?
Irrational pessimism.
Someone sells a stock we own?
Clearly irrational.
Someone buys the stock we just sold?
Also irrational.
Someone owns 50 stocks?
Diworsification.
Someone owns five?
Reckless concentration.
Someone stays in cash?
Terrified of the market.
Someone is fully invested?
Complacent fool.
This is wonderfully convenient.
There is apparently only one investor whose behavior consistently survives our rigorous intellectual examination:
Us.
🪞 The Market's Most Underrated Investment Tool
Maybe it's a mirror.
Because Zweig's joke works precisely because behavioral finance tells us that rationality is much easier to evaluate from the outside.
Our own decisions come equipped with explanations.
Other people's decisions just look stupid.
We bought because of fundamentals, valuation and long-term conviction.
They bought because of FOMO.
We held because we're patient.
They held because they're stubborn.
We sold because the facts changed.
They sold because they panicked.
Funny how that works.
⚛️ FUNanc1al Atomic Statement
“Every investor recognizes irrationality instantly. The difficulty begins when the mirror is involved.” — FUNanc1al
And perhaps that's the useful part of Zweig's joke.
The next time you're absolutely certain another investor is behaving irrationally, ask one additional question:
What if it's me?
You still may be right.
They may indeed be completely nuts.
But checking never hurts.
No stock recommendation today.
No valuation model.
No 13F.
Just nine words from Jason Zweig and a mirror. 🪞
Food for thought.
Carpe Diem!
