Welcome to the “Paradise of Machines”
Two very different events. One increasingly universal conversation.
In Paris, Pope Leo XIV warned that humanity must not lose itself in what he called a “paradise of machines,” arguing for greater ethical discernment as artificial intelligence becomes embedded in everyday life. Meanwhile, half a world away in diplomatic terms, the United States and China agreed to launch a dialogue on AI—finding at least one potential avenue for cooperation amid a relationship still defined by profound competition and disagreement.
Perhaps that is the larger story. AI has become too consequential for anyone to ignore—and too consequential to belong to any one country, company, institution or worldview. The Pope approaches it through human dignity and morality. China and the United States approach it through their own economic, technological and national interests. Corporations have their agendas. Governments have theirs. Individuals have ours. Those interests will not always coincide, and understanding them matters.
But competition does not preclude cooperation. Nor does progress eliminate responsibility. If anything, the extraordinary power of AI makes both more necessary. Those developing and deploying these systems have a responsibility to do so thoughtfully. Those of us using them have one too.
The “paradise of machines” is arriving remarkably quickly.
Making sure it remains a paradise for humans may be the more important task.
