🧬 Market Snapshot

Markets are firing on all cylinders: the S&P 500 and Nasdaq-100 are at all-time highs, while hedge funds have attracted $45 billion in Q1 inflows, pushing total industry assets to a record $5.2 trillion.

Meanwhile, trend-following quant funds are up roughly 10% year-to-date — reinforcing the sense that “everything is working” across traditional and alternative strategies.

Beneath the momentum lies a valuation reality check: the S&P 500 trades at a P/E of roughly 31, nearly double its historical mean and median.

That does not guarantee an immediate downturn, but it does mean thinner margins for error, elevated expectations, and higher sensitivity to shocks.

🌍 Hedge Funds

🚀 Hedge funds have been trimming their positions in U.S. semiconductor stocks following a substantial rally in the sector, locking in gains whilst maintaining their broader commitment to artificial intelligence-related investments (Source: Goldman Sachs)

Goldman calls the move portfolio management, not a change of conviction; overall exposure to US AI stocks still nears record highs.

We had recently reported that major firms including BNP Paribas and Susquehanna had aggressively increased exposure to AI-chip and semiconductor plays, while software allocations had quietly collapsed toward ~2% of portfolios.

The rally is real. AI demand, infrastructure spending, and earnings growth are all booming. But valuations are also becoming extreme.

Depending on methodology, the iShares Semiconductor ETF (SOXX) now trades around 38x–55x earnings versus a historical 10-year median closer to 24.6x.

In other words: investors are paying massive premiums for future AI growth.

This does not mean semiconductors suddenly collapse tomorrow. Momentum can last longer than expected.

But if history is any guide...
