Two Gotham-style smash burgers and a California Dreamin’ burger served with sauces, pickled jalapeños and chili peppers at Gotham Burger Social Club Williamsburg.

We Tried the Gotham Smash, California Dreamin’, Loaded Tots and Enough Fried Sides to Concern a Responsible Adult

Gotham delivers crispy edges, clever toppings and plenty of fun—but social-media fame should not be confused with burger divinity.

Serious burger fun make Gotham worth visiting—but 4 Charles can probably sleep peacefully tonight. 🍔🔥

Social-media hype raises expectations—and service is strictly counter-style—but Gotham still hits the spot. 🍔🔥

Some restaurants whisper their arrival. Gotham Burger Social Club walks in wearing cowboy boots, throws a smash burger onto the griddle and lets Instagram notify the neighborhood. 🍔🔥

After building a formidable following through pop-ups and its Lower East Side location, Gotham opened a permanent Brooklyn outpost at 216 Grand Street in Williamsburg, near the corner of Driggs Avenue. The new location adds a full bar, cold drafts and cocktails to the burger operation.

There are no reservations. Gotham is walk-in only—which feels appropriate. Nobody should need a calendar invitation three weeks in advance to eat a $9 burger.

We arrived with high expectations, healthy appetites and a willingness to conduct important research involving melted American cheese.

⚛️ FUNanc1al Atomic Statements

A great smash burger does not need to be profound; it needs to disappear before you remember to photograph the second half.

Social-media hype raises expectations faster than a hot griddle raises cholesterol.

Gotham’s greatest achievement is not reinventing the hamburger—it is making familiar ingredients feel unusually well coordinated.

🤠 Welcome to Burger Country

Gotham’s Williamsburg space has a warm, rustic, Western-inspired personality. It feels polished without becoming precious: an urban burger saloon where the décor has more character than the average fast-casual dining room.

The setting is pleasant enough to encourage lingering over a draft or cocktail, but the operating rhythm remains closer to a high-quality fast-food joint than a full-service restaurant. Orders arrive quickly, the system is efficient and the staff is friendly.

This is not the hushed, highly choreographed hospitality of 4 Charles Prime Rib in New York or Abe & Louie’s in Boston. It is not trying to be. Gotham wants to hand you a burger, some fried carbohydrates and possibly a cocktail before your better judgment arrives.

Mission accomplished.

🍔 The Gotham Smash: Crispy, Balanced and Gone Too Soon

The signature Gotham Smash is a nostalgic smash burger with grilled onions, melted American cheese, house-made pickles, pickled jalapeños, club sauce, ketchup and mustard.

The restaurant uses an Oklahoma-style technique, pressing the beef extremely thin against the griddle to produce crisp, lacy and deeply caramelized edges. Gotham also griddles the exterior of the top bun rather than merely toasting its interior—an apparently small decision that contributes considerable buttery crunch.

The complete combination works.

The beef is properly cooked, the onions bring sweetness, the pickles and jalapeños provide acidity and spark, and the sauces stay mostly on the right side of excess. American cheese performs its historic duty: melting obediently over beef without asking to be entered into a Michelin report.

Most importantly, the burger feels balanced. Despite all those toppings, no ingredient stages a coup.

Our single was surprisingly light and easy to eat for something involving beef, cheese and multiple sauces. It was also genuinely attractive—a tidy little burger engineered for both mouths and smartphone cameras.

At approximately $9 for a single and $12.50 for a double, Gotham remains reasonably priced by modern New York standards, a sentence that would confuse anyone transported here from 2004.

🌴 California Dreamin’: The Possible Upset

Then came the California Dreamin’: beef patty, American cheese, diced caramelized onions, lettuce, tomato and Thousand Island dressing on a sesame bun, accompanied by pickled chili peppers.

It was quite good. Possibly even better than the signature Smash.

Yes, we realize this may be burger heresy.

The lettuce and tomato give the California Dreamin’ greater freshness and contrast, while the Thousand Island dressing supplies familiar creamy tang. The sesame bun makes the entire production feel less like an ultra-smashed social-media object and more like an exceptionally pleasant classic cheeseburger.

The Gotham Smash delivers more crunch and intensity. The California Dreamin’ may offer greater balance and everyday appeal.

We are not yet declaring a winner. Further research is required. Fortunately, nobody has ever objected to a follow-up burger study.

🥔 Loaded Tots: Subtlety Has Left the Building

The Loaded Tots arrive topped with chopped cheese, pickled jalapeños, tomatoes, Cotija cheese and spicy crema.

They are precisely what the name promises: tots wearing every accessory they could find.

The toppings provide salt, heat, acidity and creaminess, while the potatoes heroically carry the structural burden underneath. This is not delicate food. No one orders Loaded Tots hoping to detect a restrained finish of alpine herbs.

But ours arrived plain. They work—and they are fun to share.

At around $16, they are not an incidental side so much as a supporting cast member with its own trailer. Order them for the table unless you are training competitively for loaded-potato consumption.

🧅 The Supporting Fry Department

The beer-battered onion rings, served with club sauce, were tasty and satisfyingly crisp, although ours leaned oily. They remained enjoyable, but the batter occasionally reminded us that it had recently spent quality time inside a fryer.

The fries were winners: straightforward, crisp and well suited to collecting stray sauce.

Together with the tots, the table contained enough fried food to qualify as a minor agricultural policy—but everything largely did its job.

🧀 The Grilled-Cheese Test

Service was friendly, fast and entirely fine. Nothing went wrong, but nothing elevated the meal into a hospitality story either.

One person in our party asked whether the kitchen could prepare the equivalent of a grilled cheese: essentially a bun with melted cheese. Because the restaurant apparently lacked a defined menu item or pricing instruction, the request could not be accommodated.

No biggie. This was not a culinary emergency.

Still, the moment captured Gotham’s service model. It is a streamlined operation built around defined menu items, not a full-service restaurant designed to improvise. Friendly? Yes. Flexible? Not especially.

When expectations are calibrated accordingly, there is little to complain about.

👹 Next Time: Release The Beastie Boy

Our next assignment is already clear: The Beastie Boy, Gotham’s triple smash burger.

Three patties. American cheese. Almost certainly an afternoon productivity write-off.

The Beastie Boy costs approximately $15 and appears to answer the timeless question: “What if the double burger had insufficient burger?”

We will return when emotionally and cardiologically prepared.

📱 The Hype Problem

Gotham regularly appears near the top of New York burger coverage. The Infatuation has ranked it among the city’s leading smash burgers and includes it in its broader best-burger guide. Condé Nast Traveler has also featured the restaurant, praising its nostalgic diner character and expertly smashed patties.

The acclaim is understandable.

Gotham has a clear identity, a recognizable product and food that photographs beautifully. It also benefits from the kind of social-media momentum that can transform crispy beef edges into a cultural event.

But intense hype creates its own problem: an excellent $9 smash burger may arrive carrying expectations normally reserved for a religious vision.

Gotham is very good. It is fun. It is affordable by New York standards. It reliably hits the spot.

It did not, for us, match the complete experience of the very best destination burgers and hospitality-driven restaurants—places such as 4 Charles or Abe & Louie’s. Those are different formats and price categories, admittedly, but they establish the upper boundary of what a memorable burger occasion can feel like.

Gotham is less a burger pilgrimage than a highly enjoyable burger stop.

That is still a meaningful achievement.

🎯 The FUNanc1al Verdict: 8.2/10

Gotham Burger Social Club delivers an excellent smash-burger experience: crisp-edged beef, intelligently balanced toppings, distinctive buns, a warm Williamsburg setting and sides capable of defeating most sensible dietary intentions.

The California Dreamin’ may quietly be the sleeper hit. The golden Tots are generous and fun. The onion rings are worth trying, though ours were oily. Service is friendly and efficient, but firmly fast-casual rather than personalized.

Would we return? Absolutely.

Would we cross three state lines and name our firstborn Gotham? Probably not.

Go hungry, temper the Instagram expectations and consider bringing enough people to justify ordering both burgers.

🍲 Food for Thought: The Cross-Hub Connection

Gotham connects several FUNanc1al worlds at once.

It is a food story about execution: familiar ingredients transformed by technique. It is a business story about turning pop-up scarcity and social-media enthusiasm into a recognizable restaurant brand. And it is a Carpe Diem story because sharing burgers, cocktails and entirely unnecessary Loaded Tots with people you enjoy is sometimes a perfectly respectable use of an evening.

Not every memorable experience needs white tablecloths or a six-week reservation strategy.

Sometimes happiness is simply a crispy-edged burger arriving while it is still hot.
