Stowe’s Seafood: Pirates, Potatoes & (Lobster) Rolls of Fun

📍 347 Beach Street, West Haven, CT 06516

🏖️ Right across from the West Haven Beach — and yes, there are pirates inside. 🏴☠️

🐟 BACKSTORY: FROM BACK PORCH TO FRIED FORTUNE

Born in the belly of the Great Depression, Stowe’s started as a humble family side hustle selling clam chowder off a back porch. Decades later, it’s grown into a fish market turned full-blown shack-style eatery — the kind of place where chowder’s hot, buns are buttery, and pirates roam freely (decoratively, at least).

They now specialize in New England-style fried seafood cooked to order, all served in nostalgic paper boats. Picture Cape Cod on a budget — minus the pretense, plus pirate vibes.

🧾 MENU + PRICES

💰 In a world where lobster rolls often cost more than your car payment, Stowe’s is refreshingly down to earth:

  • 🥣 Clam Chowder: $5.00 (Cup) / $10.00 (Bowl)

  • 🦞 Lobster Roll: Market Price — but ours rang in at $22, a steal compared to the usual $30+ highway robbery.

🧂 THE VERDICT

🥣 Clam Chowder:

Hot. Hearty. Tasty. But let’s be real: it’s mostly potato stew with clam cameo appearances. Rename it Potato Enthusiast’s Soup, and we’re good. Not bad — just under-clammed.

🦞 Lobster Roll:

The buttery grilled bun is top-tier — we’d eat it plain, honestly.
The lobster? Quite good.
The presentation? Collapse of the Lobster Empire. It arrived upside-down, falling apart like it partied too hard.
Also? Three bites and it was gone. Fun-size Halloween edition, maybe? Not exactly stingy on lobster, but the bun was so small the whole thing felt like it had stage fright. Price was friendly, sure — but the portion was bashful.

🍟 Fries & Onion Rings:

Now this is where Stowe’s gets generous. Massive portions, deliciously golden, and enough to feed your extended pirate crew. Weird flex, but we liked it.

🤝 SERVICE + VIBE

  • Service: Friendly, relaxed, fast-ish.

  • Atmosphere: Pirate memorabilia galore, plus beach breeze just outside.

  • Crowd: Everyone from tattooed locals to sandy families to foodies on a mission.

  • Typos: Yes, we spotted "on premisis" — no big deal, but hey, details matter!

🧭 FINAL TAKE

Stowe’s isn’t perfect — but it’s fun, fast, fairly priced, and beloved by many for good reason. The location alone is a win, and the pirate aesthetic deserves a salute. 🫡

✅ Go for the fries and onion rings
✅ Stay for the beach vibes
✅ Don’t expect fine dining portions
✅ Do expect fun. And maybe a plastic sword.

⚖️ TL;DR

  • ✅ Competitive prices (especially for seafood)

  • 😕 Lobster roll is tasty but tiny

  • 🤷♂️ Chowder is okay — more potato than clam

  • 🏆 Fries & onion rings are MVPs

  • 🏴☠️ Pirates make everything better
