π Our First Arrival: A Very Neapolitan Welcome
Our first encounter with Naples remains one of my favorite travel memories.
We were driving across Italy from Milan to Lecce, enjoying one spectacular stop after another, when we finally reached Naples...
without GPS.
Finding the Grand Hotel Vesuvio quickly became an adventure.
After driving around the city for what felt like twenty minutes, we spotted a police patrol car and politely asked for directions.
That proved only marginally helpful.
The officers spoke passionately.
We smiled enthusiastically.
Neither side understood very much.
After several minutes of glorious confusion, one officer suddenly smiled, jumped back into the patrol car, switched on the flashing lights, and motioned for us to follow.
What happened next still makes me laugh.
They accelerated.

Scooters materialized from seemingly impossible directions.
Cars squeezed through spaces that surely didn't exist.
Apparently, Naples has a fascinating relationship with speed limits.
