Nature has a remarkable sense of humor.
For decades, humanity has split the atom, built billion-dollar nuclear power stations, and engineered some of the most sophisticated machines ever conceived.
Then along come a few tens of tons of jellyfish.
No brain.
No bones.
No heart.
No problem.
This week, vast swarms clogged the cooling-water intake filters at France's Gravelines Nuclear Power Station, temporarily shutting down three reactors and reducing the output of a fourth. There was never any danger to the public, plant personnel, or the environment, but the episode offered a fascinating reminder that sometimes the greatest engineering challenges don't come from technology—they come from ecology.
Perhaps even more striking?
Almost the exact same thing happened last year, at the same plant, on nearly the same date.
Coincidence?
Maybe.
Or perhaps nature is trying to tell us something.
Jellyfish blooms don't happen in isolation. Overfishing removes both their predators and their competitors for food. Plastic pollution creates floating nurseries where thousands of young jellyfish can anchor and multiply. Warmer oceans accelerate their metabolism, lengthen breeding seasons, expand low-oxygen habitats where fish struggle but jellyfish thrive, and open entirely new coastlines to invasion.
In other words...
The jellyfish aren't winning because they've become smarter.
They're winning because we've made the ocean increasingly comfortable for them.
There's an irony here that would make even Mother Nature smile.
Fish help keep nuclear plants running.
Plastic helps stop them.
One ecosystem quietly supports another.
Disrupt the first...
and eventually the second notices.
Fortunately, there is another lesson hidden beneath the tentacles.
Jellyfish have survived for more than 500 million years.
They've outlived dinosaurs.
They've endured asteroid impacts.
They've witnessed continents drift.
All without developing what we proudly call a brain.
Which raises an amusing thought.
If a jellyfish can thrive without one...
imagine what you can accomplish with yours.
And if you really want to bloom...
Go with the flow.
Just...
don't go nuclear.
