COVID Is Not Going Viral Yet, but It Could (!): Vaccine Or Not Vaccine?

😷💉🤔 COVID may not be “viral” on TikTok anymore, but in real life? It’s staging a comeback tour. And like every aging rock star, it’s found its favorite stage: the American Southwest. 🎸🌵

According to the CDC, COVID-19 positivity rates recently hit 12.5% in California, Nevada, and Arizona — the highest in the nation. Texas, New Mexico, and Oklahoma are trailing just a step behind at 11.8%. Meanwhile, Los Angeles County wastewater is testing at levels not seen since February. 🚰 (Pro tip: don’t drink the wastewater. Especially in LA.)

By contrast, New York and New Jersey are chilling with the lowest rates at 5.8%. Looks like East Coast bagels are safer than West Coast tacos — for now. 🥯🌮

According to the Los Angeles Times, the Southwest—think California-to-Texas—is burning up with 12.5% COVID positivity rates, the highest in the U.S. right now. Yes, it's hotter than your summer air conditioner’s bill.

🌪️ Meet the “Stratus” Variant

This new variant isn’t a cloud, though it sure likes to hover. First detected in Asia back in January, Stratus blew into the U.S. in March and by June was the headliner, making up two-thirds of detected strains. 🎤

Nationwide, the positivity rate hit 9% in early August, higher than the post-holiday bump in January but thankfully lower than last August’s 18% surge. Deaths (🙏) remain relatively low for now.

🧪 The Vaccine Drama: To Boost or Not To Boost?

Here’s where things get controversial: In May, Health & Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. (yep, RFK Jr.) announced the CDC would no longer recommend COVID vaccines for healthy kids or pregnant women. Cue lawsuits, outrage, and enough hot takes to fill Twitter. 🔥🐦

Medical heavyweights like the American Academy of Pediatrics and American College of Physicians immediately sued, arguing the move was “baseless and uninformed.” Translation: doctors not happy. 🩺💢

Meanwhile, the CDC’s Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices stuck to its guns: boosters help. Last year’s booster, they noted, cut the risk of hospitalization by 44% and death by 23%. Sure, protection wanes as new variants pop up, but some protection > none.

💸 The $1 Trillion Problem: Long COVID

Let’s talk money. 💰

Long COVID isn’t just a health crisis, it’s an economic sinkhole. Millions of Americans haven’t been able to return to work months after infection. A Yale-led study found that 14% of Long COVID patients hadn’t gone back to work three months post-infection, even among young, previously healthy, and highly vaccinated people.

Global price tag? Research estimates over $1 trillion a year. That’s about 1% of global GDP — imagine setting fire to a small country’s entire economy every year. 🔥🌍

And in the U.S. alone? Harvard research once pegged the cost at a jaw-dropping $3.7 trillion — mostly from lost quality of life and earnings. Yikes. 😬

🧩 The Vaccine Connection

Good news: vaccines still help. Studies show they are still the best way, not only to reduce the likelihood of getting COVID-19 in the first place, but also to cut the risk of developing Long COVID even if you do catch the virus. They’re not perfect, but they’re currently the best defense against your body turning into an uncooperative roommate. 🏠🤒

🤡 The Paradox: COVID Hasn’t Gone Viral… Yet

Nobody wants another jab. And urgency levels are lower than a Monday morning Zoom call. ☕️ But here’s the kicker: COVID hasn’t gone viral yet! (Pun intended. And scary.)

If Stratus — or the next remix — decides to crank things up, we could be in for another wild ride.

So… what’s a reasonable human to do?

✋ Five Things You Can Do (Besides Panic)

  1. 💉 Get the shot — it’s not TikTok-trendy, but it works.

  2. 🗣️ Invite friends/family to consider it — peer pressure for good.

  3. 🚙 Move out of California or the Southwest (NY & NJ are holding steady at <6%).

  4. 🏦 Invest in Pfizer or Moderna — contrarian plays if COVID goes full sequel.

  5. 😂 Laugh about it while you can — humor is still free (for now).
