Carpe Diem: Why Planning a Vacation Might Make You Happier Than Taking It ✈️🧳
The Science of Travel Anticipation: Happiness Begins Before You Leave
A study of 1,530 adults reveals why dreaming about your next getaway may deliver more lasting joy than the post-vacation glow.
I've decided to plan a vacation—and I'm having so much fun I may never leave!
🎯 FunTrip/FunFood Index™ : 9.9/10 — Maximum Anticipation, Minimum Jet Lag! 🌴
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Tooltip: Here's some wonderful news for anyone who spends more time planning vacations than actually taking them: the anticipation of a trip may be one of its greatest pleasures.
And there's science to support it!
A fascinating 2010 study published in Applied Research in Quality of Life, titled Vacationers Happier, but Most Not Happier After a Holiday, examined the happiness of 1,530 Dutch adults, including 974 vacationers.
Its findings? The happiness benefits of a holiday may begin long before anyone boards a plane.

“A vacation doesn't begin at the airport. It begins the moment imagination turns an ordinary Tuesday into the promise of somewhere extraordinary."

🔬 The Science: Happiness Before Takeoff
Researchers found that people preparing for vacations reported greater happiness than those who weren't planning a getaway.
Why? The researchers suggested anticipation as a possible explanation.
Imagining the destination, browsing charming hotels, exploring restaurants, plotting adventures—apparently, dreaming about paradise can be a pleasure all its own.
And here's the delightful twist: after returning home, most vacationers weren't significantly happier than people who hadn't traveled.
Only those who experienced particularly relaxing vacations enjoyed an additional post-trip happiness boost.
That holiday glow can fade surprisingly quickly once everyday responsibilities return.
In other words, you can spend months dreaming about turquoise waters, only to come home and discover 347 unread emails.
Welcome back to reality! 📬😂
🗺️ The Eight-Week Happiness Opportunity
The study examined happiness over several weeks before and after vacations, with findings consistent with an anticipation benefit during the pre-trip period.
That doesn't mean everyone receives a guaranteed eight-week happiness boost.
But it suggests something rather wonderful: a vacation can enrich your life before it even begins.
And unlike airline tickets, daydreaming about the Amalfi Coast doesn't come with baggage fees.

"If anticipating a vacation makes us happy and coming home brings us back to earth, perhaps the smartest travel strategy is simple: take wonderful trips—and always have another one to look forward to." — FUNanc1al
🧳 My Personal Discovery: I May Never Leave!
Naturally, I read this study and immediately decided to plan a trip.
And I'm delighted to report that it's working beautifully.
I'm already enjoying the research, the possibilities, the imaginary itineraries and the anticipation.
In fact, I'm becoming so happy planning the vacation that I'm beginning to wonder whether actually going would ruin everything.
Why interrupt a perfectly delightful planning experience with delayed flights, missing luggage and the inevitable discovery that the hotel room looks considerably larger on its website?
Perhaps the ultimate vacation is one that remains permanently scheduled for next month! 😂
🌅 Carpe Diem: Plan the Trip. Enjoy the Dream. Then Go!
The lesson isn't to cancel your vacation.
It's to stop treating happiness as something that begins only when you reach your destination.
Enjoy choosing the hotel. Savor the itinerary. Research that little restaurant overlooking the sea.
Make the planning part of the adventure.
And when you finally get there? Put the itinerary away occasionally and enjoy the moment.
Plan a trip. Anticipate the joy. Live the adventure. Then plan another.
