🎃 Why I Love Halloween So Much 👻

A Little Fear, a Lot of Fun, and the Wonderful Freedom to Be Someone Else

From magical Cambridge streets to Michael Jackson's Thriller, Halloween reminds me that imagination, laughter, and a little madness make life infinitely more enjoyable.

“ Costumes, candy, horror movies, and the joy of watching people rediscover their imagination—plus why Halloween keeps inspiring my own stories and dreams."

Frédéric Marsanne | FUNanc1al

I love Halloween.

Not because I particularly enjoy dressing up as Dracula, Frankenstein's monster, or some terrifying creature from another dimension. I usually leave that pleasure to others.

But oh, how I love watching them!

Children, adults, entire families—everybody suddenly has permission to become somebody else. A superhero. A witch. A ghost. An alien. Or something so wonderfully bizarre that even the costume's creator might struggle to explain it.

And that's precisely what makes Halloween so special.

For one glorious occasion, the world gives itself permission to play.

🎭 The Wonderful Freedom to Be Anyone

Think about it.

Most of the year, we're expected to behave reasonably, dress appropriately, and maintain at least a vague appearance of normality.

Then Halloween comes along.

Suddenly, your accountant is a vampire, your neighbor is a zombie, and a perfectly respectable grown-up is walking down the street dressed as a giant banana.

Nobody judges.

Quite the opposite. We applaud!

Costumes offer people the opportunity to step outside their everyday identities, experiment with alter egos, and express parts of themselves that rarely get an invitation to come out.

I don't usually participate in the costume extravaganza myself, but I absolutely adore watching others indulge.

Especially adults.

There's something deeply endearing about people rediscovering their inner child.

And let's not forget another essential ingredient in Halloween's irresistible appeal.

Candy! 🍬

Who doesn't love candy?

Well, perhaps your dentist. But even dentists must have a favorite chocolate bar.

👻 A Little Fear Never Hurt Anyone. Well, Almost.

Halloween also celebrates something wonderfully paradoxical: our enjoyment of being frightened.

Haunted houses. Ghost stories. Horror movies. Skeletons dangling from trees. Pumpkins with suspiciously sinister smiles.

Why do we love all this?

Because there's a delicious difference between genuine danger and pretend danger.

Psychologists sometimes refer to this as recreational fear: the pleasure of experiencing suspense and adrenaline in an environment we perceive as safe.

We scream.

We laugh.

And then we ask for more.

Halloween lets us turn our anxieties about the unknown, darkness, and even mortality into entertainment.

For a few hours, fear becomes a game.

And the monsters, thankfully, usually go home before midnight.

🏡 When an Entire Neighborhood Becomes a Movie Set

One of my fondest Halloween memories comes from the years I lived in Cambridge, Massachusetts.

Some streets would undergo an extraordinary transformation.

Houses became haunted mansions. Front yards turned into elaborate cemeteries. Pumpkins glowed everywhere. Costumed children wandered among ghosts, witches, and creatures of every imaginable description.

It was spectacular.

Almost cinematic.

Walking through those neighborhoods felt less like taking an evening stroll and more like stepping onto a Hollywood movie set.

And the best part?

Everybody was in on it.

Residents devoted extraordinary creativity and effort to their decorations. Families came together. Neighbors opened their doors. Children were mesmerized.

For one evening, ordinary streets became extraordinary worlds.

I still remember that atmosphere with enormous affection.

Halloween has this remarkable ability to turn an ordinary place into a shared work of imagination.

And that, to me, is pure magic.

🍂 The Magic Starts Long Before October 31

Of course, Halloween isn't just one evening.

It's an entire season of anticipation.

The autumn leaves. The crisp air. The pumpkins appearing on porches. The decorations growing more elaborate by the day.

The spooky movies.

The candy mysteriously disappearing before the trick-or-treaters arrive.

There's something wonderfully comforting about these recurring rituals.

They connect generations, create memories, and bring a little excitement into our familiar routines.

Halloween is nostalgic without being stuck in the past.

Every year brings new costumes, new decorations, new surprises, and new reasons to smile.

🧟 Michael Jackson, Thriller, and the Monsters I Love

And then there's the music.

For reasons I can't entirely explain, Halloween always brings me back to Thriller and its extraordinary music video.

What a masterpiece!

The dancing zombies. The cinematic atmosphere. The choreography. The suspense. The humor.

And, of course, Michael Jackson himself.

A beloved singer, composer, performer, and creative genius whom I still miss dearly.

Thriller was so much more than a music video. It was a celebration of imagination—a miniature horror movie that made the frightening irresistibly entertaining.

And it reminds me of all those wonderful films that have delighted, terrified, and inspired audiences over the years.

Alien, the 1979 Ridley Scott science fiction horror film. The claustrophobic terror of the unknown.

The Thing, the 1982 John Carpenter horror film. Paranoia, suspense, and the unsettling possibility that your colleague might not be your colleague anymore.

And why not Young Frankenstein, the 1974 Mel Brooks comedy film?

Mel Brooks reminding us that even monsters can be gloriously funny.

What a range of emotions!

Fear. Wonder. Suspense. Laughter.

Sometimes all within the same scene.

These works remind me how powerful storytelling can be—and how much joy creative minds can bring to the world.

🎬 From Halloween Monsters to New Stories—and New Hopes

Perhaps that's another reason I love Halloween so much.

It inspires me.

Those costumes, decorations, films, and wonderfully imaginative characters aren't merely entertainment.

They're fuel for creativity.

They make me want to dream up new characters, create new videos, write new screenplays, and explore new worlds.

A ghost here. An alien there. Perhaps a human being desperately trying to make sense of them both.

Who knows where the next idea might lead?

And that's the beauty of imagination.

One moment you're watching a zombie dance in Thriller.

The next, you're imagining a story of your own.

Creativity has a wonderful way of turning yesterday's entertainment into tomorrow's possibilities.

And possibilities give us something precious.

Hope.

💙 Food for Thought: Never Outgrow the Joy of Playing

We spend so much of our lives being serious.

Working. Planning. Worrying. Solving problems. Trying to make sense of a world that doesn't always cooperate.

Halloween offers a refreshing alternative.

For a little while, we can simply enjoy ourselves.

We can laugh at the absurd, marvel at the creativity of others, reconnect with our neighbors, and rediscover that childlike sense of wonder.

And perhaps we can carry a little of that spirit into the rest of the year.

Because happiness doesn't always require a grand achievement.

Sometimes it begins with a glowing pumpkin, a favorite song, a wonderful movie, or a child proudly showing off a ridiculous costume.

The world doesn't need to become less serious. But perhaps we could all become a little more playful.

🎯 My Carpe Diem Takeaway

So why do I love Halloween so much?

Because it's fun.

Because it's creative.

Because it brings people together.

Because it lets us turn fear into laughter and ordinary neighborhoods into extraordinary spectacles.

Because it reminds me of Cambridge, of Thriller, of Michael Jackson, and of the wonderful films and artists who have enriched my life.

And because, somehow, all that imagination inspires me to keep creating.

New videos.

New screenplays.

New stories.

And, most importantly, new hopes.

I wish you the very same.

May you always find reasons to laugh, opportunities to dream, and the freedom to enjoy life's wonderfully unexpected moments.

Happy Halloween! 🎃👻🍬

Carpe Diem!

Be Happy. 💙
