The Biggest Danger in Surfing May Be... Your Own Surfboard
Why Wearing a Surf Helmet Might Be One of the Smartest Decisions You'll Ever Make
A recent injury study, a personal tragedy, and one simple piece of safety equipment challenge surfing's "too cool for helmets" culture.
Carpe Diem: Not being cool has saved millions of lives.
When most people picture surfing accidents, they imagine giant waves.
Nature.
Rocks.
Sharks.
The reality is often far more ironic.
One of the greatest dangers in surfing is... the surfboard itself.
A beginner wipes out.
The wave pushes the board back.
The hard fiberglass nose—or fin—strikes the surfer's head.
Throw in shallow water, where many beginners learn, and a perfectly fun afternoon can become a trip to the emergency room.
Or worse.
A recent article on surfing injuries highlights an uncomfortable truth: head injuries are among the most serious risks surfers face. The board itself is frequently involved, especially in crowded breaks and shallow beach waves.
That struck a personal chord.
I've experienced it myself.
More than once.
When you're lying on a large board waiting for a wave, it suddenly dawns on you:
"This thing could actually knock me unconscious."
It's a strange realization.
The object carrying you toward joy can also become the greatest danger.
I also remember a tragedy that made this lesson impossible to forget.
A friend of mine—my former girlfriend's brother—was surfing off the Canary Islands when he was struck in the head by his own board.
He lost consciousness.
He drowned.
It's one of those stories you never really stop thinking about.
Which brings us to helmets.
Let's be honest.
Surf helmets aren't exactly considered cool.
Neither were bicycle helmets once.
Or ski helmets.
Or motorcycle helmets.
Or seat belts.
History has a funny way of redefining what's fashionable.
Today, nobody questions why Formula One drivers wear helmets.
Or why construction workers wear hard hats.
Or why kiteboarders increasingly protect their heads.
Being alive has quietly become cooler than looking invincible.
Surfing may simply be next.
Of course, helmets must be well designed.
A heavy, waterlogged helmet that creates new hazards solves nothing.
Comfort, buoyancy and impact protection all matter.
But that's an engineering problem.
The principle remains sound.
We happily insure our cars.
We insure our homes.
Perhaps it's time we started insuring the only brain we'll ever own.
Because even a six-foot wave can generate tremendous force.
And the ocean occasionally has much bigger ideas.
Surfing should challenge us.
It shouldn't unnecessarily endanger us.
As for anyone worried a helmet might look uncool...
Remember this:
Nobody wants surfing to become a form of torture.
After all... it's called waterboarding.
(Sorry. We couldn't resist.)
Surf safely.
Carpe Diem.
